Introducing Kamuyati Nandase... our first story of hope

Profile: Kamuyati Nandase
🌿 Background & Family
- Kamuyati Nandase, also known as Sophie, is a 21‑year‑old Ugandan young lady and the first of four siblings on her mother’s side. Her father, who is still alive, does not currently live with them.
Growing up, her father was present in her life until she was about 12 or 13, after which his visits became occasional and brief. Now, his visits are less frequent. He checks on her once in a while, usually when her mother informs him about important milestones such as her Senior 4 and Senior 7 exams.
Sophie finds conversations about her father sensitive, which is understandable. However, she speaks openly about the strength and consistency of her mother.
In her words:
"I’ve always been with mummy, and she’s the only one who has been there providing for us — making sure she provides a good living for us, that we go to school. Mum has been the one taking care of us with her cleaning job. She has been trying so hard."
She added:
"The only thing that makes me sad about the whole situation is the provision."
Her mother, who actually holds a certificate in secretariat or accounting, currently works as a cleaner — a job she has done for many years. Moving from house to house, she has worked tirelessly to support Sophie and her siblings through school.
🎓 Educational Background
When I met Sophie, she had just passed her UACE exams with excellent results and had been admitted to pursue a BSc Degree in Sports Science and Leisure Management at Kyambogo University, Uganda. Her programme was scheduled to begin in August 2024. However, funding was a significant challenge. But with the support of the founder of MBTW Foundation, Sophie successfully completed Year 1 and began Year 2 in August 2025. In fact, her situation was one of the key inspirations behind the birth of MBTW Foundation.
🎥 Work Experience
Sophie’s work experience includes assisting her mother with her cleaning work and participating in practical class projects. However, what stands out most is her entrepreneurial spirit. Determined to support her education, she started her own business — Karmie Crochet — creating handmade bags to help cover her university fees, accommodation, books, and other essentials.
You can visit her business page: Karmie Crochet on Instagram
Her initiative reflects her resilience, creativity, and commitment to her future. At her age, while Sophie could have chosen several less honorable paths to support herself, she chose to work hard and build a business. However, there is only so much she can produce, especially when university is in session and she needs to focus on her studies.
🌟 Dreams & Aspirations
As of now, Sophie hopes to specialise in sports management — working with organisations such as FUFA or sports bodies for basketball, volleyball, handball, or swimming. Her degree exposes her to a wide range of sports, allowing her to choose the area where she feels most confident and passionate.
She also sees the possibility of becoming a swimming coach, especially for children, and she has the potential to work as a personal trainer. However, her priorities are:
- Sports Management
- Swimming Coach
- Personal Trainer
At MBTW Foundation, our focus on spirit, soul, and body prosperity aligns beautifully with Sophie’s field. We hope to provide her with platforms to speak on topics such as:
- The importance of exercise.
- The benefits of physical activity.
- Different exercises for maintaining health.
- The risks of improper exercise.
- Injury Prevention.
We also aim to support her with work‑placement opportunities to gain practical experience.
🎓 Support Needed
Initial support for Sophie started with the founder reaching out to friends and family — encouraging them to purchase her beautiful handmade bags from Karmie Crochet or to contribute financially in small amounts of £5, $5, or €5. The support she received during her first year of university made a tremendous difference. It gave her not only financial stability but also the confidence to continue her education with determination.
People’s donations — whether one‑time or ongoing — created real and lasting change, and it gave birth to MBTW Foundation. We are hereby inviting supporters to walk with her again on this journey until completion.
Sophie is seeking educational sponsorship to cover tuition fees and necessary scholastic materials for the remaining part of her 3‑year Degree Programme in Sports Science and Leisure Management at Kyambogo University. She also needs support to facilitate her work‑placement with MBTW Foundation.
Sophie has come this far because people believed in her. With your support, she can finish her studies and pursue the future she dreams of. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings her one step closer to completing her degree and building a life of purpose and stability.
